Surgical Director, MGB Comprehensive Lung Recovery Program
The Department of Surgery at Mass General Brigham is seeking an exceptional academic leader to serve as Surgical Director, MGB Comprehensive Lung Recovery Program. This position is expected to be at the Associate Professor or Professor level at Harvard Medical School.
The Surgical Director of the MGB Comprehensive Lung Recovery Program provides strategic, clinical, operational, and academic leadership for a nationally recognized multidisciplinary program within a tertiary and quaternary academic medical center. The Program encompasses the full spectrum of advanced lung recovery therapies, including lung transplantation, extracorporeal life support (ECMO), mechanical respiratory support, donor organ optimization, ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), lung volume reduction surgery, and investigational therapies.
The MGB Surgical Director serves as the practicing lung transplant surgeon leader responsible for integrating surgical innovation, multidisciplinary clinical care from pre- to post-surgical phases, research, education, and program growth across the continuum of advanced pulmonary disease and recovery across all MGB sites, including the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
The Surgical Director of the MGB-CLR Program is accountable for ensuring that, in all functional respects, MGB lung transplantation operates as one integrated MGB surgical program with shared governance, aligned clinical pathways, common quality metrics, coordinated regulatory oversight (with the MGB Transplant Center), and a unified vision for programmatic growth and specialization. In addition, the Surgical Director will also serve as the architect of the surgical aspects of the MGB Comprehensive Lung Recovery Program—an integrated center that unifies transplantation, extracorporeal life support, advanced surgical lung therapeutics, translational science, education, and innovation into a destination program recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in patient care, discovery, and surgical leadership. Together with the Medical Director of the MGB-CLR Program, focused on preserving and rescuing native lung function through advanced medical therapeutics, this comprehensive, patient-centered approach to medical and surgical innovations for lung recovery and replacement, will establish new standards for restoring health and extending life for patients with advanced pulmonary disease.
The successful candidate will hold an MD or equivalent degree, be appropriately board certified and licensed, and possess demonstrated leadership experience in lung transplantation for at least 5 years. The candidate must have a strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements governing transplant programs, excellent communication and consensus-building skills, and a demonstrated commitment to ethical practice, equity, transparency, and patient-centered care. Candidates will have an established national or international reputation in surgical outcomes research, health services research, implementation science, healthcare delivery science, or a related field. Candidates should demonstrate a sustained record of peer-reviewed scholarship, successful extramural funding, and leadership of multidisciplinary research programs. A strong commitment to teaching, mentorship, faculty development, collaboration, and advancing innovative research that improves healthcare delivery is essential.
